// independent study
// experiments in representation
This independent study was based around the category of experimenting with new representational methods. The focus of study for these experiments was the preliminary research topic for my thesis project: american landscape and systems of public utility. The topic is inspired by a desire to understand infrastructural systems that are hidden from public daily life and why. The modern United States population has pushed aside these systems to an overwhelming extent, where we are now completely detached from how everyday life activities and functions are made possible. Warehouses are reduced to standardized templates of replication and yet they cover millions of square feet across the American landscape.

The process began with the below diagram that illustrates all of the processes that are involved in getting a single package to your door when you order through amazon. We can get these items with a single click of the button, but what does that system really look like and what are the consequences of these conveniences?

rural vs. urban landscape

Differences in rural and urban layout contribute to the publics lack of awareness of our distribution systems. Locating the large scale systems outside of the city prevents urban and suburban dwellers from understanding their scale. The collage studies investigate the opportunities for reducing the impact of rural landuse by incorporating the warehouse into the urban framework. Combining the real imagery from warehouses with conceptual linework bring this abstract study to life.

How will the sensory impact change? Bringing everything into much closer contact and having public engaging with warehouse activities.
